Filter Categorisation

The Filter Categorisation feature allows you to change the way that items in a Category are displayed.

When the Filter Categorisation is turned on, all items in a category or subcategory within that category will be displayed on the category page. This feature is part of the eCommerce Pathway Toolbox product but is included FREE in all eCommerce websites.
How can this benefit you? All items in a subcategory of a category are related to the items in the category, so this allows the customer to see all relevant items at once without navigating further into the category. If the customer wishes to narrow down their search they can select the subcategory. Filter Categorisation makes navigation of the items in a category easier and hopefully translates to more effective selling of subcategory items on your site. The Filter Categorisation display also frees up the need to have left hand navigation and therefore allows display of more product, making it easier to navigate through sites with larger product catalogues.

An example of how this works:

Category: Clothing (53 items)
Subcategory: Menswear (21 items)
Subcategory: Summer (7 items)
Subcategory: Winter (15 items)
Subcategory: Womenswear (29 items)
Subcategory: Summer (10 items)
Subcategory: Winter (13 items)

In the above example, if the "Clothing" category is selected, the page will display all 148 items - this is the sum of all items in the parent category "Clothing" plus all the contents of the subcategories, shown below in red.

Category: Clothing (53 items)

Subcategory: Menswear (21 items)
Subcategory: Summer (7 items)
Subcategory: Winter (15 items)
Subcategory: Womenswear (29 items)
Subcategory: Summer (10 items)
Subcategory: Winter (13 items)

Using the same example, if the subcategory "Womenswear" is selected, then all the items in that category, plus any items in subcategories are displayed, total 52 items, shown below in red.

Category: Clothing (53 items)

Subcategory: Menswear (21 items)
Subcategory: Summer (7 items)
Subcategory: Winter (15 items)
Subcategory: Womenswear (29 items)
Subcategory: Summer (10 items)
Subcategory: Winter (13 items)

Again, using the same example, if the subcategory "Womenswear/Summer" is selected, then all the items in that category, plus any items in subcategories (if any) are displayed, total 10 items, shown below in red.

Category: Clothing (53 items)
Subcategory: Menswear (21 items)
Subcategory: Summer (7 items)
Subcategory: Winter (15 items)
Subcategory: Womenswear (29 items)
Subcategory: Summer (10 items)
Subcategory: Winter (13 items)

When the Filter Categorisation is turned off, only the items directly within that category are displayed in the category page. None of the items in the subcategories will be displayed unless the subcategory is selected. The customer must navigate to each individual subcategory to view what is in each. This may work better for some types of product.
